Your Next Movie Download Might Be
May 16, 2010 by: Keith KinneyWhen you consider the fact that studios have been turning out films for almost a century, it is no surprise that it can be difficult to decide on movie downloads. With thousands of choices, it is hard to remember specific titles you want to see. As new movies are released, older ones are quickly relegated to history. However, some of the classic films are still as good today as they were when they were made. Here are some excellent movies you may have forgotten.
Possibly the best movie ever made about the Titanic is the 1958 film, “A Night to Remember”. This British production featured a huge cast, including David McCallum, Kenneth Moore, and Honor Blackman. Many survivors, both passengers and crew members, were interviewed in the process of writing this story. This added much detail and factual data missing from other films about the sinking.
John Wayne made many films, but there are a few that stand out, and not just because they starred John Wayne. “Stagecoach” is credited with making him a star, and is an excellent film. However, his performances in “The Shootist”, “The Quiet Man”, “The Sands of Iwo Jima”, “The Searchers”, and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” were some of the most outstanding ones he ever turned in. And another of his films, “The High and the Mighty” was the first of the disaster films offering an ensemble cast. The movie, made in 1954, was unavailable for a long time and has only recently been offered on DVD. It concerns an airplane in serious trouble halfway between Hawaii and California.
If you prefer to combine your romance with comedy, check out “Pride and Prejudice” with Greer Garson as the prejudiced one and Laurence Olivier as the proud one. It is based on a novel by Jane Austen, and is a period piece of parents seeking husbands for five daughters. “The Philadelphia Story” serves up Katherine Hepburn as a blue-blood about to remarry. Cary Grant, as the ex-husband, arranges for reporter Jimmy Stewart to cover the ceremony for a disreputable tabloid.
If horror is your preference, the 1973 film, “The Legend of Hell House” stars Roddy McDowell as a medium who returns to the house that almost took his life. And of course, “The Exorcist” and “Poltergeist” have stood the test of time and remain classics.
Two truly interesting films that many have never seen are “55 Days at Peking” and “The Gods Must Be Crazy”. The first covers the siege of the foreign compound in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion of 1900. It stars Ava Gardner, David Niven, and Charlton Heston. The second is the story of a soda bottle thrown from an airplane and found by a tribe of Bushmen, who think it a gift from the gods. However, it causes jealousy, contention, and strife in a society that had known only peace. One young man volunteers to carry it to the end of the world and throw it off the cliff. Along the way, he is aided by some offbeat and hilarious characters.
Mystery buffs might prefer films like “Death on the Nile”, “Rebecca”, “Witness for the Prosecution”, or “Murder on the Orient Express”. Or is you are in the mood for a screwball comedy, you might like “Bringing up Baby”, starring Cary Grant, Hope and Crosby in “Road to Utopia” or “Hold That Ghost” with Abbott and Costello.
Other films offered for your consideration include “Marty”, “Damn the Defiant!”, “Pork Chop Hill”, “Ice Station Zebra” and “Command Decision”. There are, of course, several thousand more that are every bit as good.
